As one of the most overrated long distance trail in the world,El Camino de Santiago has attracted millions to walk its path. The English name of the road is Way of St. James, the pilgrimage routes of the apostle St. James the Great.Justin and Gary trekked 500 miles across Spain’s Camino de Santiago trail in a special way, and ABC News recorded their story.

Justin Skeesuck and Patrick Gray are best friends. Their parents went to the same church, and they knew each other since they were born. They are at the same age and went to middle and high school together. After watching a travel show, Justin decied to trek Spain’s Camino de Santiago trail,Patrick didn’t hesitate.  Justin was diagnosed with multifocal acquired motor axonopathy, a neuromuscular disease that causes symptoms similar to ALS.Imagine trekking 500 miles across mountains, rivers, and even a Spanish desert with your best friend, who is in a wheelchair. How would it be like?

“My wife is my primary caregiver and then Patrick steps in and he’s kind of my No. 2. I call him the vice president of my inner circle.”Justin told ABC News. After a year of training and  convincing their spouses and families, Justin and Gary hit the trail on June 3, 2014.They traversed mountains, rivers and desert terrains “with the helping hands and hearts of well over a 100 pilgrims,” Patrick said. They turned their experience in a documentary and book, I’ll Push You: A Journey of 500 Miles, Two Best Friends and One Wheelchair.

Eleventh grade student Grace said:” I was moving by their spirit, and I appreciate Patrick for helping Justin to fulfill his dream. However, because of his physical condition it made the trekking hard for both of them. I think Skeesuck should go there one day he could walk by himself, that way it is easier for Patrick.”
