Mumps Outbreak Reached High in Texas

Mumps is a viral disease caused by the mumps virus. Initial symptoms often include fever, muscle pain, headache, and feeling tired. This is then usually followed by painful swelling of one or both parotid salivary glands.Mumps is highly contagious and spreads rapidly among people living in close quarters;transmitted by direct contact with infected people or respiratory droplets.Only human could get and spread the disease. According to ABC News:The Texas Department of State Health Services reported there have been 221 cases of mumps outbreak in the state this year, while the highest number since 1994 when 234 cases were reported.Texas is the lasted state to be hit with large mumps outbreak. Among all the people, college students has been infected the most, virus spread throughout close personal contact.

Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert at Vanderbilt University Medical Center,analyzed the reason about mumps high outbreak among college students.He said college students lives closely and go to school together,and during spare time they  go to football games and travel with friends. College environment provides opportunity for close face to face communication.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control are working to prevent mumps outbreak. “Since the pre-vaccine era, there has been a more than 99% decrease in mumps cases in the United States,” the CDC said.
