Houston Flood

Houston Flood

On August 25th, a massive Category 4 hurricane slammed into Rockport Tx. A monster storm named Harvey would leave behind more damage than ever imaginable. As harvey cut its way up into San Antonio, it turned around and headed straight for Houston TX, the 4th largest city in the nation. What no one knew was that the storm would end up stalling over Houston.

I was in Louisville, Kentucky for my sisters horse show the day it hit Rockport. We heard it was terrible in Rockport but we never really knew how bad it would become in Houston. We drove back from Louisville and got stuck in a small town due to I 45 being completely submerged. We turned around and went into Huntsville Tx and barely got into Houston back at our house. We were very lucky that nothing happened to our house but we saw so much water, it was like a tsunami. We dropped my grandparents off at their house knowing they were safe because there was no water near them. We went home and luckily HEB was open so my dad went and got food for all of us. He said there were fights over food and water in the store so he went to a gas station near by and got water. We never lost power but as we drove around we realized how lucky our neighborhood was. The water only surrounded us to the point where we couldn’t leave to get back to our grandparents place. My dad took his truck and followed a bigger truck through the water and ended up having to sleep at their house. He came home the next day due to the rain stopping for a while and some of the water receding. When the storm passed, all you could see was water logged houses and trash everywhere. Even today, 9/7/17, people are still not even close to done with the pickup after Harvey.

Harvey will go down in History as one of the most destructive and devastating hurricanes ever. Over 50 inches of rain fell and it was one of the most costly disasters ever, starting at $180 billion. I’ve lived through history but sadly 70 lives have been lost. Harvey will always be remembered. #Houstonstrong
