How Roblox became popular among teens and tweens

Roblox is a free video game played on mobile, PC, Xbox, or PlayStation that is, according to the Roblox website, “an online game platform and game creation system that allows users to program games and play games created by other users.” that is also taking over tweens.

Roblox was released back in 2006 but started becoming really popular during the pandemic, surpassing $2 billion dollars. Tweens and teens have also made millions of dollars by creating a game that people play, and the game is also used to teach kids coding according to CNN Business.

Although this is a very well made game, there are some flaws. There is an in-game currency called “Robux” that you need to buy with real money, and according to CNN Business, “kids spend too much money without parental permission” trying to get more Robux to allow them to do more within the game, but then they later say, “Roblox said it works with parents to refund purchases if their child buys anything without consent.”

Marcos Bell says he played Roblox back in his earlier days, and he did know he was playing other people’s “cheesy mini-games” but he “did and did not enjoy playing Roblox, because some days that’s all I played and others I got bored quickly and moved on” though the game isn’t really designed for children over the age of 13, it can still be fun to kids who are older, as Marcos says he was about 14 when he played.
