The Disney Movies That Actually Deserve an Adaptation

Darin Bowden, Writer

Over the past years Disney has slowly been launching updated, live action, versions of their classic films. Some recent examples include: Beauty and the Beast, Pinocchio, Cruella, The Lion King, and Aladdin. Disney also recently released the teaser trailer for The Little Mermaid as well as details of the release. Many have criticized Disney for being lazy for not creating new storylines, however creating a live action movie still requires an abundance of work. On top of that, many times these movie require major visual effects and cartoons to be added in as well as edits to the story line to better fit today’s standards. Many films are set to be released within the ten year mark, but here are the ones that I think should come first.

First a synopsis of the upcoming films that will be released this year. The Little Mermaid is a refreshment of the classic film from 1989, and the new Indiana Jones movie called: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. This film is not adapted from a cartoon, instead it is an addition to the live action movie series of Indiana Jones.

The first Disney movie that should be most exciting to many is Snow White. Adapted from the 1937 classic film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Snow White is set to be released in 2024. This film is culturally significant as it inspired many theme parks, musicals, and it helped to create the classic fairytale type of story. Therefore, with the adequate time gap between the original release, Snow White should remain classic, but be refreshed in a way that won’t seem fake or rushed.

The film Peter Pan and Wendy has already had many spinoffs including the Tinkerbell movie series and many other short films and TV shows, however it has never had a fully refreshed film. This upcoming film with premiere exclusively on Disney+ (pictured) and is set to do so sometime this year. It will redo the classic storyline of the kids on Neverland island and Peter Pan.

Finally, I was able to interview a few freshman students here at Northland and when asked what their favorite Disney remake is/would be this is what they answered with. Ky Davis, Natalie Bohannon, and Claire Hummel said, “Lion King” and Jamie Goodman says, “Beauty and the Beast.”
