The Clintons Take Houston
April 12, 2017
On Friday April 7th, an organization named Annie’s List hosted a one million dollar fundraiser in an effort to support women running for public office. I attended the event at the brand new Marriott Marquis in downtown Houston, and I did not expect to have the experience I ended up having. To attend the luncheon, it cost a minimum of $5000 a table, and even more if you wanted to sit closer to the speaker’s podium. My plan was to simply wait outside the venue and hopefully hear the speakers while I waited. I thought that even the plan I had conjured up would be risky enough, considering Hillary Clinton was the headlining speaker and secret service men were scattered all over the building. Nonetheless, I spotted an open door and walked right through, which provided a perfect spot to see and hear Clinton give a 30 minute speech. Topics ranged from the recent Syrian missile strikes (which she believes should be followed up by a broader, more strategic plan) to the funding of Planned Parenthood. Most importantly, however, is the emphasis she put on encouraging women to run for government positions.
No matter what party you identify with, gender diversity in government is lacking. Men have always dominated the political arena, which is why Annie’s List aims to financially aid as many female candidates as possible to make strides toward equality. Hillary Clinton’s appearance at the event definitely racked in a substantial amount of money for the organization, and also brought a small group of pro-Trump protestors to the sidewalk outside. The tiny protest outside was quiet and calm, which most likely delivered some peace to the plentiful amounts of police men and women, as well as the secret service crew.
The Clinton’s Houston trip did not end there. In fact, former presidents Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush spent time together at the Bush’s Houston abode; a tradition that has become an annual event. According to Bill Clinton’s twitter, the duo caught up on “kids, grandkids, old times and new times. And socks.” Yes, socks. Clinton gave Bush 2 pairs of socks; one blue with bees on them, and the others green with chocolate labradors on them. It seems like the two share an odd, yet goofy sense of humor.
I believe that the friendship formed between the two historical figures is a model of unity that all Americans should value because their stark political differences have been put aside. The Clintons are top leaders for the Democratic party, meanwhile, the Bush family has served as a Republican icon for years. Nevertheless, they share a major belief: Trump has got to go. The criticism placed on Trump just within the past couple months has shone a light on political relationships; making some stronger and others weaker.
