Houston’s devastation – many left without homes

POV of Sara Zollo,

It was a Friday morning, 10 o’clock to be exact. Looking outside it did not seem as if there would be a hurricane because it looked fine outside but little did I know that this was the, as the popular saying goes, the “calm before the storm.” I was looking through my social medias as usual and saw these funny memes about Hurricane Harvey and thinking this so called category 4 Hurricane would never come.

Sidenote: Now if you don’t know about Houston, it is one of the largest cities in Texas. Saying that, you can imagine how many people were affected by the flood.

Looking forward to Saturday morning, the weather had now escalated from nothing to FLOODING. I kept getting annoying alerts on my phone about flash flooding in my area and tornado warnings every ten seconds. Then I thought, yikes this is actually gonna happen. The next thing I know I walk in my living room and my dad already had the news on and to my horror, I saw people evacuating their homes knowing they may lose everything. Shortly after, my mom told me to start packing my things in case our family had to evacuate. Luckily we did not evacuate and as a matter of fact, throughout the whole week our family still had food, wifi, electricity, and our only loss was an old van. The whole event was honestly really bad. What you see on t.v. does not take as much effect on you as when you see it in real life. Honestly, I can’t relate to those who got affected because I did not go through what they did, but the only things that I can do are help out those in need/volunteer and care for them. Driving through the neighborhoods of those affected can be painful, seeing piles of people’s furniture and other items stacked right in front of their houses. On a positive note, what I did notice is that people can be very generous. I was sitting in front of the person’s house that I was volunteering at and at least three times people came either giving us food or inviting us to join them to eat. It was awesome to see so many people work out of the greatness of their hearts and see the generosity people have offered. Though Hurricane Harvey was a tragedy to not only our city but to many people around us, our nation came together and did the best we could to fix the problem.
