You have probably heard of the country Liberia in your life. Other than it’s located in Africa, most people wouldn’t know a second thing about it. But today, the country Liberia made an appearance on the top international news section on BBC. The reason being that it’s citizenship is granted base on the people’s skin color.
According to BBC, there are big debate going on in the country of Liberia about whether or not should they change the constitution to make it easier for foreigner of non-black descendants to immigrant. There are thousands of “outsider” who have been living in Liberia for decades but still could not gain a full citizenship because of Liberian’s policy.
The reason for this ridiculers policy is because that when Liberia was established, it was suppose to be a shelter country for those free-African American to come back to their motherland after cruel life in the U.S. So many of which are so scared of people of non-color, they totally stopped their chances to enter into the country.
Although Liberia’s newly elected President George Weah described the rule as “unnecessary, racist and inappropriate”, and he is taking steps to repeal this law, many people still stand oppose to it. It will be interesting to see how this would go for the country of Liberia.
Sophomore Alec Garza commented: “That seems racist, I mean… Yeah, that’s basically the definition of racism, right?”
And Stephine Yang, another sophomore, said: “Well, lucky I don’t live in Liberia, I won’t be able to be a citizen in this case.”
