My Thanksgiving Traditions

As the holidays begin to roll around, so do those annual traditions every family has! A major part of the holidays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, is that we spend time with our family, friends and loved ones. After years of celebrating these holidays we accustom ourselves to traditions we seem to practice constantly. Thanksgiving is just around the corner and so are all of our infamous traditions. That’s just what the holidays are about, making them your own!

Because I was born into a Mexican family, I have about over twenty pairs of aunt and uncles and Lord knows how many cousins I have. Having a family this big has been the biggest blessing in my life for the past sixteen years I’ve been experiencing it. Of course, our biggest tradition is spending Thanksgiving all together. Although, it is extremely difficult to make sure everyone fits in one house, we make the best of it. Apart from that, another tradition we have, and so does every other person in America probably, is eating. This is a tradition in my family because it is also a major part of our culture. Everywhere you go you eat or you take food home or you feed others and beg them to take food home. Our Mexican Thanksgivings are what keeps me looking forward to the Holidays. We do not only have turkey, but tamales too!! But, the fun definitely does not stop there. Every year the girls of the family bring a plant sed of some sort and we all plant it in a  little pot. The purpose of this is that the next Thanksgiving whoever’s plant is still alive, wins something! My plant from last year died months ago.

It is amazing how many traditions and simple gestures make up our Thanksgiving or holiday. As I grow older I know I start to appreciate these things more and more.
