Spring Show: Radium Girls!

At Northland Christian, instead of planning to do an ordinary Spring Comedy Show, Theatre Director Mrs. Carolyn Jurick is trying something new. Introducing the new Spring Show, (a drama), Radium Girls!  In a Spring Show, it’s where ten to twenty students play multiple roles.

In 1926, radium was a miracle cure, Madame Curie an international celebrity, and luminous watches the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, Radium Girls traces the efforts of Grace Fryer, a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder, an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire. Written with warmth and humor, Radium Girls is a fast-moving, highly theatrical ensemble piece for 9 to 10 actors, who play more than 30 parts—friends, co-workers, lovers, relatives, attorneys, scientists, consumer advocates, and myriad interested bystanders. Called a “powerful” and “engrossing” drama by critics, Radium Girls offers a wry, unflinching look at the peculiarly American obsessions with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science.

I interviewed Senior Marly Rogers to see her opinion of the Spring Show!

How do you feel about doing the Spring Show (Drama) instead of the Spring Comedy?

“I am thrilled to be doing a drama this year for the Spring production. I believe that it will challenge and diversify the acting capabilities of the NCS Theatre Department,” said Rogers.

Do you think Radium Girls will be an amazing show?

Rogers said, “I think Radium Girls will be an amazing show!! It really tackles a historical issue and event and will bring to life history.”

What do you think that would really stand out about Radium Girls?

“Radium Girls will be a show that is highly remembered, I believe. It brings life to women voices who suffered in the past as well as illuminate the hardships that were faced with the death-inductive radium on all of America,” said Rogers.

What would be your favorite thing about the Spring Show?

“Oh my, I don’t know what my favorite thing for the Spring Show would be. I have so many. I guess I would say the capability to bring a story to life with just simple words. There is no music, no huge dance numbers, simply actors and actresses coming together to grow in acting on stage,” said Rogers.

I can’t wait to see how this wonderful show will play out! Go come to see on May 2 through 4. Hope to see you there!
