Every year, the Northland Fine Arts Department gathers together to showcase the hard work and achievements of the fine arts students. This year’s theme is broadway; orchestra will be playing a variety of broadway pieces from shows such as Phantom of the Opera, Fiddler on the Roof, and Frozen, while choir will be performing songs from Matilda and Your a Good Man Charlie Brown. Many Northland students remember past Extravaganzas from the performances and food afterwards.
A typical Extravaganza show includes alternating performances from the choir and orchestra with interludes of videos from Mrs. Jurick’s video production and theater classes. Then the art show occurs after the performances with drinks and snacks from the Fine Arts Society.
Typically, the art show is held after the various performances from choir, orchestra, and theater. Last year, Mrs. Lopez was the art teacher and she took great pride in leading Northland’s art car to several parades around Houston. Mrs. Lopez also wanted to have an art show separate from the fine arts extravaganza, so last year’s art section of the Extravaganza took place in March. However, this year the art section is returning to the same day as the Extravaganza.
According to art teacher Mr. Andrew Menees, ” I like the idea of giving people something to do before the shows. Also, I think that every fine arts student, the orchestra students, the art students, are more talented than people would expect. So, I think the audience will be surprised how talented the students are.”
So, mark your calendars! The Fine Arts Extravaganza will take place in the Northland Gym May 1st at 6:30pm with performances from orchestra, video production, drama, choir, and a walking gallery from the art department complete with refreshments.
