Oscar Nominations- Diversity or Not?

Angela Lian, Reporter

The Oscar nominations of 2017 came out on January 24, 2017 with a tremendous amount of attention. The nominations including Moonlight, Lion, Fences, ect.. The themes vary from many perspectives, but mostly about the voice of minorities. Looking back at the Oscar nominations last year, #oscarsowhite obviously gained tons of attention, it was a movement that brought up by an activist, April Reign, to object to the all white nominations.  Compare to 2016’s nominations, this year there are African-American actors and actresses have been nominated, including Viola Davis, Denzel Washington, Dev Patel, Ruth Negga, Octavia Spencer, Mahershala Ali and Naomie Harris. The racial diversity of the nominations this year forms a great contract with the nomination in 2016.

However, different arguments rise ever since, some claim that the racial diversity was limited on African-American, other races didn’t have any nomination at all such as Latin-Americans and Asian-Americans. There are also arguments argue that the nominations this year concerns too much about the diversity compare to last year, the purpose of the awards was supposed to be rewarding the excellences, but having “rules” for diversity could lessen the honors.

Oscar as an award that has great significance, the majority expect it to be fair and inclusive, the most important work is to balance between the two so it can reward the ones that deserve the honor.
